Masanori Umeda
Born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1941. Graduated from KUWAZAWA DESIGN SCHOOL, went over to Itary in 1966 and since then cooperated with co-workers for A & PG CASTIGLIONI STUDIO until 1969. Then worked for OLIVETTI as a consulting designer through 1970 to 1979, when he went back to Japan. Joined the activities of MEMPHIS through 1981 to 1983. Established U-META DESIGN, INC. in 1986. His main works include MEMPHIS furniture, a coffee set for YAMAKA, interior design for TOMATO BANK, flower chairs for EDRA, office restroom system for INAX, lighting apparatus for YAMAGIWA & IWASAKI, a monument SWATCH ART CLOCK TOWER for The Atlanta Olympic 1996, etc. He was awarded Braun Prize in 1968, IF in 1987, IF and Grand Prix for Good Design in Japan in 1990, and Japan Interior Designers Association Award in 1991. His works have been permanent collected by The National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Musée des Arts Decoratifs de Montreal, The Denver Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Chicago Athenaeum Museum, The Groninger Museum, The Design Museum of Lisbon.
